For both flat and fancy styles, learn practical and decorative uses of these weaving techniques resulting in light and stunning creations with innovative patterns to create wire designs interspersed with natural & man-made materials.

Fancy Weaving

is another popular weaving style that allows you to create comfortable, flexible patterns while using strong materials such as steel wire which will never degrade or break, providing a professional alternative to the many jewellery designs that are improperly manufactured using elastic cord that lasts only 6-12 months.

Chain Maille Jewellery

The history of chain maille jewellery and its numerous modern weaves and patterns are fun and add a creative dimension to the program culminating with a multi-layered fashionable chain-maille bracelet.

Making and Rolling Sheet Metal and Wire

Most jewellery projects begin by shaping raw materials. Learn tools and techniques to produce usable, even and malleable metal sheets and wires. Learn how wire/sheet hardness is increased and how to anneal hardened metals to regain their softness.

Sawing, Piercing and Drilling Techniques

Sawing, piercing & drilling are the most essential processes used by any metalsmith; learn to saw & pierce effectively & cleanly with minimal waste. Practice accurate drilling with hand & power tools.

Roll Printing and Texturing Metals

Practice with the use of steel punches to create textures; learn how to apply textures through the use of a rolling mill. For more unusual surface textures, master the technique of reticulation.

Hot Joining: Soldering and Fusing

Practice gas torch soldering on different metals and understand metal and solder compatibilities. Also learn fusing, the process of bonding metals together at melting point without solder.

Cold Joining and Mechanisms

Many mechanisms and joints require movement and thus cannot be soldered or fused. Learn common cold joining techniques to combine different design parts by rivetting.

Stone Setting

Apply traditional prong and bezel stone setting styles from first principles and understand the challenges of more advanced setting techniques such as channel, flush and pavé settings...

Professional Finishing

What is Metal Clay?!

'Metal clay' is a new jewellery technology that comes from advances in powder metallurgy. It is composed of pure silver particles, water and binders. In this form it is soft and malleable like plasticine: very easy to sculpt into any shape you can imagine. When your design is ready, you 'fire' the piece - raising it to high temperatures and causing the water and binders to evaporate and the metal particles to 'sinter' or fuse together, leaving a solid metal jewellery design! In this Silver-jewellery making workshop, you will use Silver Metal Clay, and produce a design in pure silver (999 silver, more pure than sterling or 925 silver!)

You will Learn...

Introduction to Powder Mettalurgy

Understand the varieties of metal clay available, learn about firing alternatives and special techniques for modelling with each. Create unique designs using clay-type, syringe type and paste-type materials. Create rings, pendants, brooches and earrings.

Freeform Ring and professional Gemstone Setting

Learn how to use gemstone heads to securely set gemstones using prongs in any design. Learn the precice measurements needed to produce custom-fit rings and explore additional finishing options.

Syringed Leaf with bezel-set stone

This class teaches the many uses of the syringe-type metal clay to produce larger but light weight creations. The syringe allows greater accuracy in directing the design into more intricate patterns. An interesting and useful stone setting technique is incorporated into the project to add colour and interest.

Filigree & Syringe Setting

By forming basic shapes in a material called 'Cork' clay which burns at a lower temperature than the metal clay we can achieve wonderful large but light designer jewellery. Easy and fun, this addictive class will make you forget time and produce stunning one-of-kind centrepieces.

Hollow Earrings

Gem Encrusted Brooch

Brooches are very popular in this part of the world. Learn how to combine the metal clay to produce more vibrant and 3-dimentional designs experimenting with shape and textures formed by a useful 'build-up' technique.

Syringed Ring

By forming basic shapes in a material called 'Cork' clay which burns at a lower temperature than the metal clay we can achieve wonderful large but light designer jewellery. Easy and fun, this addictive class will make you forget time and produce stunning one-of-kind centrepieces.

Pearl-set Ring

Discover the added possibilities when working with a Metal Clay which dries 4 times slower than the average. See what you can produce and learn a new technique of extruding this clay type from a syringe. Pearl setting is included to produce elegant designs.

Sulphurising and Patina Techniques

Silver Finishing Techniques

The tools and techniques for drawing, sketching and tracing are introduced and practiced. These include enlargement, reduction and application of creative variation to jewellery lines, use of basic forms and combinations of these techniques to rapidly produce creative, unique pieces of jewellery!

JD100: Rings with Gemstones, Pendants and other designs

Differences between the varieties of pearls readily available in the market today are identified. Origins of some of the most beautiful specimens as well as common imitations and tests are covered. South sea, Japanese and Chinese pearls are closely inspected.

JD100: Settings and Findings

Settings and findings keep the gem on the metal and the jewellery attached to the wearer. Learn about the hundreds of types of findings designers use, and many exciting ways to set gemstones into your jewellery designs.

JD100: Drawing Gemstones

Master drawing all the common gem cuts in all three views. Understand when to use faceted, cabochon and fancy shape gems and how to use common length-to-width ratios for most typical cuts create perfect gemstone designs.
